🌟 Ben Cropp
Diver Ben Cropp gave Port Douglas’s Sugar Wharf an unusual second life. From 1979, the former commercial waterfront building was adapted as his residence and a shipwreck museum, linking a working-diver’s interests with the town’s maritime setting. For many years visitors encountered that collection in a structure originally associated with shipping and the sugar trade. The museum chapter has ended, but the wharf survives. Cropp’s association remains part of its history of changing uses, from moving cargo to displaying objects recovered from the sea.
